The paper describes a three-year effort of collecting, vetting and validating ground truth events in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and western Eurasia, carried out by a consortium of institutes from both academia and private industry. The consortium was named Group 2 Consortium and led by Science Appplications International Corp. with consortium members University of Colorado at Boulder, Harvard University, University of California at San Diego, Multimax, Inc., Western Services, and the Geophysical Institute of Israel.

We provide the Reference Event List described in the paper in various formats, such as plain ASCII text files, CSS3.0 format relational database, IMS1.0 bulletin, and platform-independent XML formats. A comprehensive description of the CSS3.0 format is found at the SAIC SMDC Monitoring Research website; the IMS1.0 format is the predecessor (and a subset) of the IASPEI Seismic Format. A summary of the events, sources of origins and arrival data as well as references are provided in the metadata table.

When using arrival data, please use only the time defining phases (timedef field in the assoc table set to 'd'). We labeled arrivals that were considered vetted as time defining. However, we retained all original arrival information. Phases that did not pass the vetting procedures (outlier analysis and quality control) were labeled as non-defining. It should also be noted that in most cases arrival data came from various sources, hence the corresponding time residuals may not refer to the hypocenter and origin time listed in the origin table. This is especially true for explosions (both nuclear and chemical) where the origin information was obtained from independent, non-seismic locations.
