You Should Be a Member of SSA |
|
|
The Seismological Society of America is devoted to the advancement of seismology and its applications in understanding and mitigating earthquake hazards and in imaging the structure of the Earth. As a member of SSA, you keep up to date with research in seismology and related fields through the Society's publications, conferences, and topical electronic communities.
You help define the concerns and research interests of the seismological community. You support the Society's efforts to communicate the results of earthquake science research to those in government and industry who make decisions regarding seismic risk. You become eligible for SSA's lectureships and awards, promoting and honoring excellence in science and service.
You join other members, located throughout the world, representing a variety of technical interests: seismologists and other geophysicists, geologists, engineers, insurers, and policy-makers in preparedness and safety.

Members of SSA Receive the Bulletin—Electronic and/or Print Editions. |
|
The Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) (ISSN 0037-1106) has been the premier international journal of research in earthquake seismology and related disciplines since 1911. It has has recently been noted as the most cited earthquake journal by Thomson ISI. BSSA is issued bimonthly in both print and electronic forms.
BSSA also includes on-line electronic supplements that contain information that are better presented in electronic format. Special issues or sections of issues may focus on particular earthquakes or topics of interest to the seismological community.
BSSA includes papers in the general areas of seismology, paleoseismicity, seismicity, earthquake engineering, seismic hazards, seismic discrimination, ground motion, Earth structure, seismotectonics, and effects of earthquakes.

Members of SSA Receive SRL - Electronic and/or Print Editions.
|
|
Seismological Research Letters (SRL) (ISSN 0895-0695) is a unique journal - the first to serve as a general forum for informal communications among seismologists, as well as between seismology and other disciplines.
Contents include contributed articles of topics of broad seismological and earthquake engineering interest and utility, opinion pieces on current seismological topics, plus news and notes about people in the field and their activities. Regular columns include the Electronic Seismologist, EduQuakes, and Earthquake Lites (seismological humor). A special section in SRL for the Eastern Section of SSA focuses on eastern North American and intraplate seismology. Abstracts of papers to be presented at the annual meeting of SSA and the annual meeting of the Eastern Section of SSA also appear in SRL, as does the annual roster of members of the Society.

Members are Connected Electronically |
|
Members may now form electronic communities - moderated listservs on focused interests such as Legacy Seismological Data.
On the SSA Web site (http://www.seismosoc.org/) members have access to the online roster of members, full text of BSSA (starting with the February 2000 issue), WebIndices to all of SRL and BSSA, abstracts of recent BSSA's, columns and Opinions from SRL, and abstracts for recent Annual Meetings. Tables of contents of both journals appear prior to publication, and you can be notified by e-mail when they appear. You can also be notified when new job openings are posted.

Members Receive Information and Discounts on SSA Meetings |
|
Annual meetings provide a stimulating exchange of research on a wide range of topics. They are held in the spring of each year in a variety of locations. You must be a member of the Society (or sponsored by a member) to submit papers for presentation at the meetings. Members of the Society receive advance information, abstracts of papers presented, and discounts on registration fees.
Annual meetings usually include special symposia of particular technical interest and may also include general interest sessions for the public. From time to time, the Society conducts special seminars on the applications of research, public safety, and related issues.
