PhD Position in Seismology

Employer: GFZ Potsdam

Posted: 4 Apr 2012
Closing Date: 09/01/2012

The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ Potsdam) represents, as a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the national Research Centre for Earth Sciences. The Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group (YIG) ‘From Microseismicity to Large Earthquakes: Studies Related to Seismic Hazard Assessment, Carbon Sequestration and Sustainable Resource Management’ addresses different seismological topics focussing on the analysis of natural and induced microseismicity data sets.

The YIG is located in the Department 3 ‘Geodynamics’, Section ‘Geomechanics and Rheology’. In the frame of a DFG research grant we will fill a PhD Position (m/f) entitled. High-resolution imaging of material interfaces at the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NW Turkey) from near-fault seismic recordings.

Tasks: The successful candidate will perform high resolution seismic imaging studies using recordings from on-, near- and off-fault stations along different segments of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) in NW Turkey to quantitatively study the internal structure of the NAFZ. Particular targets for imaging include the existence and properties of bimaterial fault interfaces and low-velocity damage zones based on fault zone head and trapped waves, along with direct body waves and near-fault anisotropy. The obtained high-resolution images are expected to contribute to fundamental aspects of earthquake and fault dynamics at the NAFZ, including the mode and propagation direction of earthquake ruptures, along with refined derivation of earthquake source properties.

Furthermore, this project is relevant for improvement of seismic hazard assessment in the Istanbul-Marmara region in the light of the expected forthcoming large earthquake.

For further information please contact: Prof. Dr. M. Bohnhoff (bohnhoff [at] gfz-potsdam [dot] de) or Dr. F. Bulut (bulut [at] gfz-potsdam [dot] de).

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the University of Southern California (Prof. Y. Ben-Zion).

Qualifications:

– Diploma or Master of Sciences in Geophysics or Physics with strong background in seismology.

– Experience in digital signal processing and programming skills.

– Ability and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment.

Starting date: TBD. Duration: 2+1 years.

The GFZ strives to increase the percentage of female employees in the field of science and encourages applications from female candidates. There is a kindergarden service available.

Handicapped applicants will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications. Evaluation will begin after the announcement of the position and continue until the position is filled.

Please submit application by email to Dr. F. Bulut (bulut [at] gfz-potsdam [dot] de) or by mail to:
