Job Details Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA
Type: Full Time – Experienced
Catagories: Natural Hazards, Seismology, Solid Earth Geophysics Required
The Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, is searching for a leader in the science of seismic phenomena for appointment as Professor of Earth Sciences. It is expected that this hire will affiliate with and potentially become part of the leadership team for the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC).
The headquarters of SCEC is located at USC but Center activities involve numerous institutions and disciplines. At present, these activities receive significant funding from NSF, USGS, and other government and industry sources. The scope of SCEC research is determined by its collaborating groups and faculty as well as by its leadership, including the Director. We seek to appoint an individual who can offer a compelling vision on how to build on existing strengths in geophysics within the Earth Sciences department and who will be a leader in fault system science.
Present SCEC initiatives balance observational, theoretical, experimental, and computational approaches to basic and applied fault mechanics research and hazard assessment. SCEC-funded research uses the geological setting of Southern California as a regional test-bed for collaborative research that has numerous societal and economic implications. Reflecting the diversity and challenge of its mission, SCEC also engages in extensive education and outreach activities.
Faculty in the Department of Earth Sciences at USC have diverse research interests that are aligned with earthquake science as well as the general area of Lithospheric Systems Dynamics and solid Earth-surface process-exosphere interactions.
We encourage applications from qualified scientists from all appropriate disciplines, with an appointment expected as a tenured Full Professor. Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field.
In order to be considered for this position, all candidates must apply.
