Field Trips

Trip #1:  The San Andreas and Calaveras Faults:  20 Years after Loma Prieta


In the 20 years since the Loma Prieta earthquake a significant amount of new information has been developed about the Bay Area's active faults.  Among these are the San Andreas and Calaveras. The field trip has stops to look at both of these faults between the southern Santa Cruz Mountains and Hollister, including a paleoseismic trench for viewing. At this latitude the San Andreas and Calaveras faults accommodate about 80 percent of Pacific-North American plate boundary slip. The field trip provides the opportunity to discuss how new GPS, InSAR, creep measurements, historical seismicity, and paleoseismic data are being used to improve our understanding of the behavior of these major faults and of the hazards they represent.

The field trip will leave Monterey on Saturday at 8:30 AM and return by 5:00 PM. There will be several short flat walks and comfortable shoes or boots are advised. Participants are reminded that weather in April is variable. Lunch will be provided.  A stop for winetasting is planned (optional additional charge.)

The field trip is being led by David Schwartz and Tom Fumal (USGS), Tim Dawson (California Geological Survey),  Heidi Stenner (Exponent Failure Analysis Associates), Ingrid Johanson (UC Berkeley), and Ashley Streig and Keith Kelson  (William Lettis and Associates).

 

Trip #2:  Marine Science and the Monterey Bay Area


This field trip will sample some of the richly diverse marine research in the Monterey Bay area. Facilities visited will be the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML), both in Moss Landing, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, Marine Sciences campus in Santa Cruz, including the USGS Pacific Science Center.  The field trip will leave from Monterey about 8:30 am, visit the MBARI and MLML facilities in the morning, break for lunch in Moss Landing at Phil’s Seafood Restaurant next door to MBARI, continue north to the UC-Santa Cruz and USGS facilities for the afternoon, and then return to Monterey. Dress is casual. Lunch cost is not included in the field trip price.
 
Approximately seventy percent of the globe is covered by water, a medium through which electromagnetic energy does not transmit and an environment lacking the basic communications infrastructure of the dry regions of this planet. This first part of the field trip will take 20 participants to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in Moss Landing, California, where the MARS cabled observatory has recently come on line. This multi-million dollar facility will provide an opportunity to begin extending the permanent northern California seismic networks offshore, allowing data from instruments west of all strands of the San Andreas Fault System to transmit data in real time to data centers for processing. The MARS facility will also provide the basic power and communications infrastructure in the deep sea offshore Monterey Bay to allow long-term observations that have never before been possible. The tour will also include an overview of other advanced technology projects underway at MBARI.
 
Next, the field trip will visit the nearby Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). Operated by a consortium of seven California State University campuses,  MLML is the second oldest marine lab on the Monterey Bay established in 1966.  The old MLML facility was severely damaged by liquefaction of the sand spit during the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.  A new MLML facility was recently rebuilt on a 21-acre hillside with breathtaking views of the Monterey Bay and local wetlands. The lab is situated in an excellent location for the study of the marine world. The head of the Monterey Submarine Canyon, the largest such feature on the west coast of North America, begins within a few hundred meters of the Moss Landing harbor and the MLML research fleet.
 
The field trip will then continue north to the University of California, Santa Cruz, Marine Sciences campus located on the first marine terrace, providing a good overview of both the flight of the higher terraces and the dynamic coastline of northern Santa Cruz County. This portion of the field trip will provide a discussion and view of the uplifted marine terraces, coastal hazards and processes, the Marine Discovery Center, as well as a behind the scenes look at the marine mammal (dolphins, elephant seal, sea lion) research facilities and programs.  The tour of the USGS Pacific Science Center will focus on discussion of high-resolution offshore mapping technologies and their value in assessing earthquake hazards along the California coast.

Field trip signup will be available at the on-site registration desk on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Field Trip Refund Policy: 

100% refund if cancellation is received before the field trip signup deadline.  Field trip cancellations received after the deadline will received 100% refund IF another person fills the vacated place on the trip.  Unfilled cancellations will be refunded only as funds allow.
