2011 Annual Meeting

13-15 April

Memphis, Tennessee

SSA’s 2011 Annual Meeting will provide a stimulating exchange of research on a wide range of topics with colleagues from all over the world. Oral presentations, poster sessions, exhibits, field trips, business meetings and social gatherings all provide participants the opportunity to meet and share with their peers. The meeting will also commemorate the bicentennial of the the great 1811 and 1812 New Madrid earthquakes that forever changed the mid-western US landscape. In 2011 and 2012, there will be events held throughout the central United States observing the anniversary. The pre-registration early-bird discounts ended on March 11.  Online registration continues through April 1.  Registration is available on-site in Memphis through the end of the meeting.  Click here to register online.

Town Hall Meeting

"Before there was a Memphis:  the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812" is the topic of a public meeting to understand the early history (1782-1810) of southwest Tennessee and large sequences of earthquakes that have occurrred several times in the Central U.S. over the past 1500 years.  An overview will also be provided on upcoming New Madrid Bicentennial events in the Memphis area.

Speakers will include the incoming SSA President; Memphis Mayor A. C. Wharton; Jimmy Ogle, Memphis History Lecturer; Kent Moran, Historian at The Center for Earthquake Research in Information; Buddy Schweig, USGS; and Chuck Langston, CERI Director.

The meeting will be held 7:00-8:30 Wednesday evening, April 13, 2011    The event will be open to the public for the purpose of informing the general population and public officials about earthquake-related issues.
