Reception and Public Forum at San Francisco City Hall Commemorating
the 1906 Earthquake
The previous grand San Francisco City Hall was destroyed on this date 95 years ago in the cataclysm that spurred the creation of SSA; the image of its wreckage is depicted on the Medal of the SSA. The current city hall, built in 1915 and restored and retrofitted in 1999, is a gold and copper Beaux Arts masterpiece that boasts the fifth-tallest dome in the world and rests upon approximately 600 base isolators. Winner of the 1999 National Preservation Honor Award, it shows how preservation and seismic safety can coexist. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served, and Robert Mondavi Wineries will provide and pour wine at the reception. Mayor Willie Brown is scheduled to make a brief appearance at the reception. After the reception, join John Boatwright of the U.S. Geological Survey and Lucien Canton of the Mayor's Office of Emergency Services for the City of San Francisco at a public forum as they describe the effects of the earthquake and the great fire and the steps the city has taken to ensure that a similar catastrophe does not occur again. Meet with '06 Quake Survivors
At 5:12 a.m. at Lotta's Fountain, early birds can participate in a
unique informal annual San Francisco commemoration of the 1906 earthquake
by joining earthquake survivors and their friends as they are honored
with libations at Lotta's Fountain, at the corner of Market and Geary
Streets. Lotta's Fountain served as a survivors' message board and
gathering place after the earthquake, and it continues to serve that
function every 18 April. A description
of
Lotta's Fountain is in the online collections of the San
Francisco Arts Commission and an article
on its history is available as part of the z
San Francisco Online Visitor Guide and History Index. This event
is not sponsored by SSA, and participants will be responsible for
their own transportation. Return to 2001 Meeting page | |||
