Pacific Geoscience Centre BBQ and Tour
A salmon and steak barbeque (a vegeterian option will be available) will be held at the Pacific Geoscience Centre, to be followed by a tour of the facility. There will be two seatings. Bus transportation will be provided.
Geological Evidence of the M 9 Cascadia Megathrust Earthquake of 1700
This day-long field trip to Port Alberni, on central Vancouver Island, will show evidence of the tsunamis generated by the M 9 megathrust earthquake that struck off the coast of Vancouver Island, Washington, and Oregon, on 26 January 1700, and the megathrust earthquake that struck Alaska in 1964. Lunch will be provided.
Earthquake Hazards in the Victoria Area
This will be a day-long field trip focusing on the earthquake hazards of Victoria. At a scenic overlook we will discuss the geology and seismic hazards of the region. We will then visit sites representing the ground-motion amplification, liquefaction, and slope instability hazards. We will conclude by visiting sites showing some of the structural and geotechnical remedial and mitigative strategies employed. Lunch will be provided. Return to 2002 Meeting page | |||
