SSA Travel Grant Winner Testimonials

SSA recognizes the importance of students and student participation in the SSA Annual Meeting. Each year, SSA works diligently to provide Student members and international members with the opportunity to apply for several Society funded travel grants: Student Travel Grant, International Travel Grant, and the SSA/ESC Travel Grant. Each of these grants provide Students and international members the chance to receive a modest travel award to help fund the cost of travel to the SSA Annual Meeting.

This year, SSA has asked the travel grant recipients from the last two years of SSA Annual Meetings to share some of their thoughts about their experience as an applicant and as a travel grant winner. Below are the testimonials received from the 2012 San Diego, CA and 2013 Salt Lake City, UT Annual Meeting Student Travel Grant winners, International Travel Grant winner and ESC/SSA Travel Grant winner.

SSA received many excellent personal statements from winners in every travel grant category, and hopes these testimonials will encourage other students and international members to apply for these wonderful grant opportunities. Special thanks to all of these past winners for sharing their input, advice, and personal perspective on the overall experience.

The 2014 Annual Meeting will be held in Anchorage, Alaska (30 April – 2 May 2014), and SSA strongly encourages students and international members to apply for these travel grant opportunities before the 30 November deadline.

To apply, complete the SSA 2014 Travel Grant Application online. Or, for more information on the travel grant opportunities available, please visit the SSA Travel Grants page.

If you are not eligible to apply for one of the travel grant opportunities, but would still like to show your support of SSA Student and international members, please Contribute to the SSA Student Travel Grant Fund today!

"The SSA conference provided me access to scientific talks relevant to my research as well as provided an intimate setting to discuss new numerical methods with leaders in the field of seismology. The Travel Grant award facilitated my conference attendance, without which I would have lacked the funding to attend."

"Through the generous support of SSA, I was grateful to receive a Student Travel Grant to attend the 2012 Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, during the last year of my Ph.D. My participation in the meeting was beneficial from both an educational and networking perspective, as I concluded my student career and began my faculty career. This was the first time I had attended the SSA Annual Meeting, and it was one of my favorite scientific meetings I have attended to date. I look forward to supporting the Student Travel Grant so that future students will be able to have this opportunity."

"I feel grateful to be awarded the 2012 SSA travel grant. The travel grant covered the registration fee, the air ticket, and most of the lodging fee, which made my first SSA trip come true. After that, the SSA meeting has been one of my favorite academic meetings to attend. It focuses on the field of seismology and the organization of the oral and poster presentations is very reasonable. I have enough time to catch the talks I am interested in and to go through the posters during the two coffee breaks. Also, the luncheon provides a good opportunity to effectively communicate with other seismologists. Personally, I benefited a lot from the 2012 meeting. I got a chance to talk to others in my field, and other scientists generously shared their unpublished manuscript with me and tried to help me get the local data for my area of study. Overall, attending the SSA meeting was a wonderful experience."

"I'm a student travel grant winner for the 2012 SSA annual meeting. I really enjoy the SSA meeting mainly because of the opportunity to present my research and receive feedback from many many other researchers. Such interactions absolutely help me understand my own research much better than before. Moreover, the SSA meeting has a great diversity in topics, which let me learn many new things in seismology."

"The SSA Student Travel Grant is an outstanding supplement to attend a great meeting! It provided me with an excellent opportunity to meet with other scientists. I also had the unique opportunity to join the SSA Membership Committee as a student to learn about meeting logistics and to give input for future meetings."

"As a first-time Participant, it is a great honor to receive the SSA 2013 Student Travel Grant. SSA is a perfect place to present my results in order to get quality feedback or comments and provide new perspective to the seismologic community. In addition, this meeting also provides an ideal opportunity to network with other seismologists and fellow students in this community. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of SSA and recommend students in seismology field to join us."

"I was fortunate enough to receive a student travel grant to attend the annual SSA meeting in San Diego in 2012. This was my first time attending the SSA annual meeting, and it was a wonderful opportunity to share my research and be introduced to other research going on within the seismological community. It was also exciting to explore a place I have never visited before during conference-downtime. The application process was straight-forward and easy to navigate, and I received my travel grant once I arrived at the conference. I encourage all students to apply for a travel grant, as the annual SSA meeting is a great experience for networking and sharing research. The travel grant enables any students who may be worried about affording the trip to the conference to enjoy the benefits of attending."

"As a 2013 SSA travel grant recipient, I was able to attend the annual meeting in Salt Lake City and present findings from my previous field season. At the conference, I was able to discuss my work with prevalent researchers in my field and gain new ideas and perspectives concerning my research. I was also able to attend many different presentations, which broadened my knowledge in several sub disciplines of seismology. Thanks SSA!"

"I had a good experience at the SSA 2013 Meeting in Salt Lake City, and owe to the Student Travel Grant. It was good opportunity for me to meet my old colleagues in Caltech and many researchers from all over the world. This meeting is not big, therefore every participant shares similar interests and I like meetings of this size. I hope this grant encourages many enthusiastic students to attend this meeting."

"I would like to thank SSA for providing me the opportunity, though the International Travel Grant, to participate in an incredible scientific forum, such as the 2013 Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City. Every year the SSA meeting focuses on timely topics of seismological research and promotes state-of-the-art research results. The participation of younger scientists in large scale and the discussion with well-known scientists makes the SSA Annual Meeting the place to be! I encourage everyone to join SSA and enjoy the upcoming meeting! See you at the reception by the poster session, the Annual Luncheon or other social event and of course inside the many interesting oral sessions!"
