SSA Members Testify on USGS Budget

The House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources, led by Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA), held an oversight hearing on May 22, 2008, on "The United States Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazards Program - Science, Preparation, and Response."

"In light of the recent destruction caused by earthquakes worldwide," the Subcommittee sought to examine efforts by the United States Geological Survey's Earthquake Hazards Program to minimize the tragic toll earthquakes can take on human life, property, and infrastructure.
Witnesses focused on the many ways that USGS leverages its resources by external and cooperative agreements and several raised concerns about proposed funding cuts in the 2009 USGS budget.
