Sixth Annual Geosciences Congressional Visits Day September 17–18, 2013

8 Jul 2013

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI), in collaboration with many other geoscience societies including SSA, invites geoscientists to come to Washington DC for the sixth annual Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (GEO-CVD) on September 17-18, 2013.

Decision makers need to hear from geoscientists. Become a citizen geoscientist and join many of your colleagues for this two-day event uniting geoscience researchers, professionals, students, educators, engineers, and executives in Washington DC to raise visibility and support for the geosciences.

A constructive visit from citizen geoscientists about the importance and value of geoscience (and geoscience-related engineering) research and education is the most effective way to inform and impact federal science policy.

AGI, AGU, GSA, AAPG and other geoscience societies are organizing Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (GEO-CVD) for September of 2013. Many other AGI member societies participate in GEO-CVD through AGI and everyone is welcome. Contact SSA at membership[at]seismosoc[dot]org, or email AGI’s Government Affairs staff (govt[at]agiweb[dot]org) to sign-up.

What To Expect

Participants will spend the first afternoon at a workshop learning how Congress works, how to conduct congressional visits, about relevant legislation, and about relevant federal agencies and programs. At the end of the workshop, participants are given time to craft and practice their message.

The second day will consist of visits with members of Congress or congressional staff on Capitol Hill. The visits will focus on the importance of geoscience research and development and geoscience education. Geoscientists will speak for these shared concerns with a unified message and can enhance the message by using examples from their professional work and experiences. All of the scheduling and logistics for the workshop and visits will be arranged by the geosocieties.
