| Le 26 [Dec], 8 h. 30 m. du matin, grande catastrophe dans toute la Gréce; ruine d’Aigion, observée par moi-même à Kalamaki sur l’isthme. Les 26, 27, 28 et 29, détonations et secousses oservées par moi à Corinthe | […] la secousse du 26 décembre a été la plus désastreuse, quoiqu’elle n’ait duré que 3 à 4 seconds. Elle a été surtout ressentie à Vostizza, Galaxidi et dans plusieurs autres localités de l’Achaïe et de la Roumelie. Vingt hommes ont été tués et plus de deux cents blessés sous les ruines des maisons renversées. Presque toutes les églises on été endommagées, leurs gros murs lézardés | [From what we learnt so far, we can summarize: a) that the largest damage suffered was that to the houses, both those that collapsed and those which were heavily damaged. Due to the earthquake suffered Aigion and ten surrounding villages, those in the coastal plain between Patras and Akrata, as far as the villages of the plain of Krissa, Delphi, Amphissa, Galaxidhion, Vitrinitsa, Xilogaidara, and as I heard the same Karpenisi, - the largest damage having been suffered in the collapsed houses and the ships. b) That insignificant damage was suffered by the cultivable lands and other goods. c) That the number of people and cattle died because of the earthquake was small with respect to the extent of the shaken areas | The great earthquake, however, did not take place until December 26, at a quarter before 9 a.m. […] The places which suffered most were Galaxidi, Itea, Vytrinitza, Aegium, and seven or eight villages near Aegium. At Amphissa, Delphi, and Corinth, the injury was slight; whilst in Megara, the Peiraeus, and Athens, the shock only resembled that of an ordinary earthquake | Aigion ward 1861 bei weitem nicht so schwer heimgesucht als 1817, denn es fiel 1861 nur ein Haus zusammen; aber fast alle wurden arg beschädigt. Eine bis zwei Stunden östlicher wurden, die Dörfer in Achaja übel zugerichtet, Valymitika aber und Trypia nebst dem dortigen Kloster von Grund aus vernichtet. Am Ende der Ebene, östlich bei Punta, waren die Trümmer schon nicht mehr erheblicher Art. Westlicher als Aigion gab es keinen grösseren Schaden. Aber im Norden, jenseits des Golfes, in Galaxeidion, fielen 9 oder 10 ansehnliche gut gebaute steinerne Häuser zusammen. Es fiel das Dach der grossen neuen Schule und alle Häuser und Kirchen, die hier auf dem Kalkfels erbaut sind, erlitten starke Beschädigungen. Der Hafenort Itea verlor einige Häuser und ward, wie ein Theil von Galaxeidion und der Skala von Vytrinitza, durch die Seeflut überschwemmt. In Amphissa, Chrysso und Delphi gab es keine Zerstörungen von Belang |
