Electronic Supplement to
Modeling Earthquake Moment Magnitudes on Imbricate Reverse Faults from Paleoseismic Data: Fox Peak and Forest Creek Faults, South Island, New Zealand

by T. Stahl, M. C. Quigley, A. McGill, and M. S. Bebbington

This electronic supplement contains figures showing supplemental information for the interpretation of the displayed trench logs and tables showing unit descriptions for the trenches discussed in the main article. Figure S1 is a gridded digital elevation model (DEM) from a total-station survey during reconnaissance of the trench 1 site. Figures S2–S7 are color trench logs with photomosaics constructed from geometrically corrected field photographs of gridded trench walls. Tables S1–S5 show unit descriptions for trenches 1–5, respectively.

Figures

Figure S1. Microtopographic total-station survey of trench 1 site. The white footprint is the approximate location of the trench. The trench location is within a graben that consists of a series of normal faults striking perpendicular to a paleochannel. The resulting postfaulting topography is a basin with no external drainage; black arrows show the direction of modern drainage. The local topographic low increases the likelihood of trapping suitable sediments and charcoal for dating the stratigraphy. Trench 2 is located in the next graben over (to the top right, southeast).

Figure S2. Trench 1 color log and photomosaic. See the text in the main article for discussion of units and interpretation.

Figure S3. Trench 2 color log and photomosaic. See the text in the main article for discussion of units and interpretation.

Figure S4. Trench 3 color log and photomosaic. See the text in the main article for discussion of units and interpretation.

Figure S5. Trench 4 north wall color log and photomosaic. See the text in the main article for discussion of units and interpretation. Insets (b) and (c) show the correlation of units onto the south wall and the hanging wall of the scarp, respectively.

Figure S7. Trench 5 color log and photomosaic. See the text in the main article for discussion of units and interpretation.
