Electronic Supplement to
Empirical MwML, mb, and Ms Conversions in Western China

by Chi-Chia Tang, Lupei Zhu, and Rong Huang

This electronic supplement contains earthquake catalog and tables showing differences between magnitude estimates for Mw, ML, mb, and Ms. We listed values of R(Δ) and Q(h,Δ) in Tables S1 and S2, respectively. To obtain a completed catalog containing Mw, ML, mb, and Ms, we first searched earthquakes with Mw>4.5 in the centroid moment tensor (CMT) catalog. Next, we found corresponding values of ML, mb, and Ms in the China Earthquake Data Center (CEDC) catalog for the events and combined them to a new catalog listed in Table S3.

Tables

Table S1. Correction function of ML (R(Δ)). The intervals of Δs are not equal in different distance ranges. The function table is provided by the China Earthquake Administration.

Table S2. Correction function of mb (Q(h,Δ)). The intervals of Δs are not equal in different distance ranges. The function table is provided by the China Earthquake Administration.

Table S3 [Plain Text Comma-separated Values; ~24 KB]. Combined catalog including different magnitude scales. Three events with Mw≥7.5 (listed in the end of the table) were not used in this study. Magnitude with value of 0.0 represents magnitude absence in original catalog. Date (yyyy/mm/dd); Time (local time); Latitude (°); Longitude (°); Depth (km); ML; mb; Ms; and Mw.

Data and Resources

The catalog provided by China Earthquake Data Center was searched using http://www.csndmc.ac.cn/wdc4seis@bj/earthquakes/csn_catalog_p001.jsp (last accessed October 2015). Another catalog consists of Mw produced by the Global Centroid Moment Tensor Project was obtained at http://www.globalcmt.org/CMTsearch.html (last accessed October 2015).
