INSTRUCTIONS FOR A BASIC BSSA ELECTRONIC SUPPLEMENT The file esupp-template.html is a template that can be edited into a basic electronic supplement for BSSA. A basic electronic supplement is a web page that describes one or more supplemental files and provides links to those files. For instance, a file may be a photograph of a paleoseismic trench, a movie showing simulated ground motions, or a seismogram stored as a binary file. For more information on BSSA electronic supplements see http://www.seismosoc.org/publications/esupps.php The template file can be found there. To create your electronic supplement you must edit this file which is a web page in html (hypertext markup language). To edit this file open it in a text editor (not a web browswer). To see how your work is going open the file in a web browswer. Much of html may be difficult for you to read but the parts you need to edit are fairly simple. Some basic information on html tags used in this template can be found at these web pages: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_primary.asp http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_links.asp For an example of an electronic supplement using this template see http://www.seismosoc.org/publications/BSSA_html/bssa_94-4/03180-esupp/03180-esupp.html To use this template save it in a directory with the files that are part of the supplement and then search for and edit the following strings (including the square brackets). Do not change anything above START-HERE or after END-HERE. 1) [Title-of-Paper] : replace this with the title of your paper 2) [List-of-Authors] : replace this with the author list of your paper 3) [Short-Header-Describing-The-Supplemental-Material] : a few words describing what is in your electronic supplement e.g. "Animations of Ground Motion" or "Catalog of Earthquakes" 4) [Paragraph-Describing-the-Supplemental-Material] : a paragraph describing what is in the supplemental material and what the reader can learn from viewing it. 5) [Type-of-Files] : what type of files are linked next, e.g. Figures, Animations, Waveforms, Photographs 6) [Filename] : the exact name of the linked file (please be sure your filenames do not contain spaces and that they end in the proper three or four character filename extension (e.g., ".jpg" for JPEGs, ".csv" for a comma-separated value text file, etc.). 7) [File-Title] : e.g. "Figure 1" or "Seismogram from Station 1." 8) [File-Description.] : a sentence or paragraph describing the file To link multiple files you will have to replicate the text for the first file and then edit it. Once you are done, you must put all of these files in a directory on a web server or ftp site and then validate the html with the service at http://validator.w3.org/ send the address to Carol Mark at bssa@seismosoc.org or enter it into the submission questions when you upload your submission to the online submission site.
