Minutes from SSA’s January and October 1909 board meetings are reproduced below. At the January meeting, discussion included how SSA could ensure accurate press reports about earthquakes and assure the public that “except in very rare instances they are not greatly to be feared.” At the October meeting, board members congratulated themselves for helping persuade the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University to install seismographs, and they laid out a plan to measure deformation along the San Andreas fault.
