Electronic Supplement to
On the Ability of the Benford’s Law to Detect Earthquakes and Discriminate Seismic Signals

by J. Díaz, J. Gallart, and M. Ruiz

This contribution presents a new method to detect the arrival of seismic signals based on the application of the Benford’s Law to the raw seismic data. We include two tables with the hypocentral parameters of the events used in the manuscript and a figure illustrating the ability of the method to detect teleseismic events in stations with typical levels of noise.

Tables

Table S1. Seismic events with magnitude equal or larger than 5.5 between 1 April and 4 April 2014.

Table S2. Cataloged events on 29 April 2014 on the central Pyrenees zone.

Figure

Figure S1. Examples of teleseismic detections using the Benford’s law estimator (BLe) for different events and stations of the TopoIberia-IberArray seismic network. (a) 22 April 2013 01:16 Mw 6.0 Mexico event (time length used in the calculation of the BLe: 1 minute). (b) 5 January 2013 08:58 Mw 7.5 southern Alaska event (time length: 5 minutes). (c) 24 May 2013 05:44 Mw 8.3 Okhotsk Sea event (time length: 5 minutes). The inset shows the location of the selected stations.
