This electronic supplement provides five additional figures (four detailed maps of the composite seismic sources (CSS) in the Lower Rhine Graben (LRG), and one figure showing 3-D views of the model), one additional table with parameters of earthquake focal mechanisms, detailed information sheets (including additional tables) for each composite seismic source, and references cited in the above.
Table S1 lists parameters of focal mechanisms in the LRG since 1980 determined by the Royal Observatory of Belgium.
Figures S1 to S4 show detailed maps of different parts of the Lower Rhine Graben, showing CSS in relation to historical and instrumental seismicity (Royal Observatory of Belgium catalog 1350 – 2011), location of vertical-displacement observations, paleoseismic trenches, and SRTM3v2 digital elevation model. Fault annotations correspond to abbreviations in Table 1 in the manuscript, and numbers next to vertical displacement deformation points correspond to indexes in the tables in the matching information sheets.
Figure S5 shows two 3-D views of the CSS model of the LRG, constructed assuming all faults dip 57.5°, and truncating faults at a depth where they are inferred to intersect more important antithetic faults: a) Oblique NW-ward view along the graben axis; b) Frontal NW-ward view along the graben axis. Yellow lines correspond to country borders, red lines to CSS surface traces, thin purple lines to CSS outlines.
The information sheets provide more detailed information about each composite seismic source, in particular:
We first describe the sources that are part of the SW border fault zone (i.e., the Feldbiss fault zone), and thus dip to the east. West-dipping faults belonging to the NE border fault zone are described in a second section. The detailed maps in Figures ES1 to ES4 show the composite seismic sources, and the fault sections they are composed of, in relation to the topography and seismic activity. Location of paleoseismic trenches and observations of vertical displacements are indicated as well.
