Model Update December 2008: Upper Mantle Heterogeneity beneath North America from Travel Time Tomography with Global and USArray Transportable Array Data

by Scott Burdick, Robert D. van der Hilst, Frank L. Vernon, Vladik Martynov, Trilby Cox, Jennifer Eakins, Taimi Mulder, Luciana Astiz, Gary L. Pavlis

MIT P-wave tomography model for the United States created using traveltime residuals from the global EHB catalogue plus USArray Transportable Array from 2004 to December 2008

The model is formatted as a space-delimited table.  Each row is a longitude and a latitude, followed by the p-wave velocity perturbation at depths from 25 to 1000 km in increments of 25 km.

This update also includes a simple Matlab script for plotting cross sections and map sections from the new model.  Output examples are shown below.

Download: MITP_USA_2008DEC.tar.zip. [Zipped Tar Archive; ~4.5 MB]. Contains a space-delimited ASCII text data file and a Matlab script and coast data file.

Output Examples

[Example Map]

Map view with 100 km depth slice from MITP_USA_2008DEC. Plotted with +/- 1.5% dV/V.  Red line represents location of cross section.  Map size and depth slice can be modified in plotting script.

[Example Cross Section]

Cross section down to 100 km defined in map view.  Plotted with +/- 1.2% dV/V. Dotted lines show 410 and 660 km depths.  Depth extent and coordinates can be modified in plotting script.
