Student & Early-Career Attendees

SSA is proud to support our early-career and student attendees at the Annual Meeting. We offer discounted registration in addition to the below opportunities.

Travel Grants

SSA is proud to offer students and international travel grants to our 2020 Annual Meeting. Travel grants cover the cost of meeting registration and provide a modest cash award. We have several Society-funded travel grants open for applications:

  • Student Travel Grants are available to SSA student members from inside or outside the USA who must travel more than 500 km (311 miles) to attend the meeting.
  • International Travel Grants are available to SSA members who are not students and who must travel from outside the US to attend the SSA meeting.
  • ESC/SSA Travel Grants are available to anyone traveling from a member-state of the European Seismological Commission. This grant is provided under a cooperative agreement between SSA and ESC. Click here to see the list of ESC member-states.

Applications will be accepted until the deadline, 30 November at 5 p.m. PT.

Mentoring Luncheon
Tuesday, 28 April, Noon–1 p.m.

At the 2020 meeting, student and early-career attendees will have the opportunity to register for a luncheon dedicated to creating conversation between seasoned seismologists and seismologists starting their careers. Replacing the mentoring breakfast, this is a great opportunity to speak to seismologists working in the field and build connections with your fellow students and early-career members.

Student and Early-Career Reception
Tuesday, 28 April, 7:30–8:30 p.m.

Connect with your fellow SSA student and early-career members at an evening reception.

Child Care

Child care will be available at the 2020 Annual Meeting in Albuquerque through KiddieCorp. KiddieCorp has been providing child care programs to conventions, trade shows and special events for more than 30 years.

The Annual Meeting dates are Monday, 27 April – Thursday, 30 April. Workshops and the Opening Reception are scheduled for Monday, 27 April. Child care will be available Monday, 27 April – Thursday, 30 April from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be located at the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, across the street from the Convention Center where the technical program will be held.

Children ages 6 months through 17 years of age are eligible to attend the child care program. Snacks and beverages will be provided; meals are to be supplied by parents, or will be available for purchase at the time of registration.

Partially subsidized by SSA, the cost per child is $14/hour. If parents are late picking up their child at the end of the day, there will be a late fee of $5 per child for every 5 minutes thereafter. Register early as availability is limited and handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Online registration for child care will open 2 January 2020 and close 25 March 2020.

Student Presentation Award

In order to help identify outstanding work by SSA student members, SSA asks our members to nominate students for the Student Presentation Award. The award is given for excellent posters or talks at the Annual Meeting.

At the time of the presentation, each award winner must be registered as a student attendee and also be a student member of SSA in good standing. All student presenters will be considered eligible for the award.
