1 September 2026—Following the July 2026 application cycle, SSA awarded 7 grants to members at all career stages across our global community. The grants, funded by generous donations to the Society, will enable these scientists to share research, make professional connections and create events that help advance seismology.
Community Grants
- Hongyu Xiao and Paul Ogwari received $5,000 to support Machine Learning for Induced Seismicity Detection: A Hands-On Technical Workshop. Their hands-on workshop will introduce college STEM students in rural Oklahoma to advanced technical concepts in seismology, specifically focusing on the application of machine learning (ML) to detect induced seismicity.
- David Naranjo was awarded $5,000 to fund SET—Seismology for the Energy Transition in the Netherlands. This three-day meeting at TU Delft trains early-career seismologists in methods for monitoring geothermal and geological storage operations. The meeting aims to teach state-of-the-art methods and bring together seismologists working on geological storage and geothermal energy, with the goal of advancing the science of microseismic monitoring.
- Muhammad Bilal Malik was awarded $5,000 to fund the Training Workshop on Monitoring and Modelling Induced Seismicity: From Strain to Slip taking place in Lahore, Pakistan. The workshop builds practical capacity among students and early-career researchers to monitor and model induced seismicity using microseismic and fibre-optic DAS data, alongside geomechanical modelling. It aims to establish lasting research and training capacity, build a local network and broaden participation through free registration, travel bursaries and openly shared materials.
Global Travel Grants
SSA awarded $8,230 in Global Travel Grants to support these student and early-career members in sharing their research at conferences hosted by other scientific organizations around the globe:
- Michael Snook (Georgia Institute of Technology) will attend the Workshop: Environmental Seismology: From Rock Physics, Fracture Mechanics to Hydrology and Cryo-seismology in Autrans, France.
- Iván Rojas Churkovic (University of Hawai’i at Mānoa) will travel to Valdivia, Chile for the XVII Congreso Geológico Chileno.
- Mario Fusco (National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics/University of Trieste) will present work at the EGU General Assembly 2027 in Vienna, Austria.
- Muhammad Bilal Malik (University of Alberta) will travel to Tasmania, Australia for the Australian Earthquake Engineering Society (AEES) 2026 Annual Conference.
Prepare Your Grant Applications this November: 2027 Annual Meeting Travel Grants
The 2027 Annual Meeting Travel Grants open this November. SSA is offering five types of travel grants to participate in the 2027 Annual Meeting:
- Student Travel Grants are available to SSA student members from inside or outside the U.S.
- Early-Career Grants are available to members in good standing who are within six years of their terminal degree.
- International Travel Grants are available to non-U.S. resident SSA members who are six years or more post terminal degree (i.e., student and early-career members should apply through the grants for their membership category).
- ESC/SSA Travel Grants are available to anyone traveling from a member-state of the European Seismological Commission. An active SSA membership is not required to apply for this grant. This grant is provided under a cooperative agreement between SSA and ESC. Click here to see the list of ESC member-states.
- Domestic Regular Members Travel Grants are available to anyone traveling domestically to the meeting who holds a regular SSA membership. Government employees are ineligible for this travel grant.
