SSA and the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission (LACSC) have agreed to a joint international conference to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 24-26 April 2018.
The conference is the first joint meeting between SSA and LACSC, which is one of four Regional Commissions of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth Interior (IASPEI). The two organizations, led by SSA President Jim Mori and LACSC President Victor A. Huérfano, completed their agreement for the joint conference at the IASPEI Regional Assembly for the Latin American and Caribbean Seismological Commission, held 20-22 June in San Jose, Costa Rica.
The international conference, "Seismology of the Americas," will offer a program that reflects broad coverage of seismological topics of interest to the Latin American and Caribbean region, including tsunami and urban seismic hazards and regional seismic networks, as well as the full slate of SSA Annual Meeting sessions on topics including active tectonics, faults, and earthquakes; deep Earth structure and seismicity; induced seismicity; earthquake engineering; ground motion modeling; and volcanism.
Program chairs include Christa von Hillebrandt-Andrade, manager of the Caribbean Tsunami Warning Program of the U.S. National Weather Service in Puerto Rico and a former SSA president; Carol Prentice of the USGS at Menlo Park; and Elizabeth Vanacore of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez and the Puerto Rico Seismic Network.
The joint meeting will be held during the 100th anniversary year of the 1918 San Fermín earthquake, which was a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that was accompanied by a tsunami and is considered one of the largest natural disasters to affect Puerto Rico.
