Electronic Supplement to
Ground Motions at Memphis and St. Louis from M 7.5–8.0 Earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone

by Gail M. Atkinson and Igor A. Beresnev

The files which may be downloaded below contain time histories and other associated supplemental information for this paper. Each of the archive files contains a readme file explaining the information in that archive. To obtain the best-estimate time histories, download the RESULTS archive. The ALTERNATES archive contains the alternative time histories discussed in the paper. The INPUT archive contains the input files to FINSIM for all simulations. Please refer to the text of the paper for details of the methods and simulated records.

Results Archive

This archive contains the output files from the simulations. The files *.psa contain the average response spectra for each of the best estimate cases, with naming convention identical to the input files *.in (see directory=input). The *.acc files contain the time histories (located in the ts subdirectory). EG. memphis1n.acc is the time history for memphis, scenario 1(M=8), nonlinear soil. The actual parameters for each case are given in *.par.

Summary of cases for best-estimate results:

  • memphis1.* Memphis, M8.0, linear soil
  • memphis1n.* Memphis, M8.0, nonlinear soil
  • memphis1r.* Memphis, M8.0, rock
  • memphis2.* Memphis, M7.5, linear soil
  • memphis2n.* Memphis, M7.5, nonlinear soil
  • memphis2r.* Memphis, M7.5, rock

Alternates Archive

This archive contains the output files from the simulations that explore various alternative input parameters, to establish uncertainty due to variability in directivity, strike, etc. The files *.psa contain the average response spectra for each case, where the details of the case are found in the corresponding *.par file. The time histories are in the *.acc files EG (located in the tsalt subdirectory). memphis1n2.acc is the time history for memphis, scenario 1(M=8), nonlinear soil, with simulation parameters as in memphis1n2.par. For this particular case, the radiation strength factor is 2.0 instead of the best estimate value of 1.5.

Input Archive

This archive contains the input files to FINSIM used for the simulations, for the best-estimate cases.

The FINSIM input files have names *.in The names indicate first the location, then the scenario (1=M8, 2=M7.5), then the soil (r=rock, n=nonlinear soil). EG. stl1n.in is the input file for St. Louis, for the M8 scenario, assuming nonlinear soil. The corresponding files for rock and linear soil are stl1r.in and stl1.in.

The input files refer to soil and crustal amplification files that will also be accessed by FINSIM. These files are included here also (*.amp).

Summary of cases for best-estimate results:

  • memphis1.* Memphis, M8.0, linear soil
  • memphis1n.* Memphis, M8.0, nonlinear soil
  • memphis1r.* Memphis, M8.0, rock
  • memphis2.* Memphis, M7.5, linear soil
  • memphis2n.* Memphis, M7.5, nonlinear soil
  • memphis2r.* Memphis, M7.5, rock
