ES-SSA 2024 Annual Meeting

ES-SSA Annual Meeting

21-22 October 2024

The ES-SSA 2024 Annual Meeting will be hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. The meeting will take place in-person with technical sessions on 21-22 October 2024, and a local field trip on 20 October 2024.

While ES-SSA focuses primarily on advancing earthquake science in Central and Eastern North America and intraplate seismology, the ES-SSA Annual Meeting also welcome contributions from other aspects of earthquake sciences and seismology. These include, but not limited to: earthquake geology, induced earthquakes, tectonic geodesy, statistical seismology and earthquake engineering.

Field trip

Brevard Fault Geology and Recent Shallow Seismicity in the Northeastern Metropolitan Atlanta Region

Join us on Sunday, October 20 for a full-day field trip to explore some of the major geologic features of Metropolitan Atlanta and to investigate the causes of recent shallow seismicity in the region.

In the morning, we will visit Arabia-Davidson Mountain, a prominent monadnock and exfoliation dome composed of the regionally extensive Lithonia Gneiss. In July 2023, an exfoliation event occurred at Arabia Mountain, which left large cracks in the outcrop and was recorded by seismic stations within 50 km of the site. Since Spring 2024, researchers at Georgia Tech and the USGS have been instrumenting this region to better understand how rock exfoliation events occur in this region.

We will have lunch at Stone Mountain, an early Permian quartz monzonite stock. Here we look briefly at the geologic history of the mountain and see evidence of additional exfoliation events that have occurred in the last few decades.

In the afternoon, we will visit exposures (and possibly a rock quarry) that allow us views into the architecture of the Brevard Fault Zone, the major Late Paleozoic to Mid-Mesozoic tectonic feature that strikes SW-NE through Georgia. In proximity to the axis of this zone, we very recently experienced a swarm of small earthquakes near the shore of Lake Sidney Lanier, Atlanta’s major reservoir.

Tentative Time: 9:00-4:00 pm EST, Oct. 20, 2024. The field trip cost is $50 for members of ES-SSA, $60 for non-members of ES-SSA, $40 for students.
