15 January 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai Eruption and Tsunami
Seismological Research Letters (SRL) is soliciting papers for a focus section on the 15 January 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption and tsunami.
On 15 January 2022 following a month of activity, the volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai in the Tonga Islands erupted massively. The eruption is unprecedented in modern times. It is one of the largest volcanic explosions since the beginning of the modern era in which satellites continuously observe the Earth; a broad range of high fidelity, digitally recording instrumentation are monitoring many different parameters and new instrumentation and analysis methods are being explored. The explosion produced a tsunami that destroyed villages, knocked out communications and traveled throughout the Pacific Ocean. The atmospheric Lamb waves from the eruption circled the globe and caused audible phenomena in Europe and Canada, as well as tsunami-like waves measured in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea.
The focus section invites papers on any topic associated with the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai Eruption and Tsunami, including but not limited to the eruption, its size and timeline; associated atmospheric, oceanic and solid Earth phenomena and their effects; sources, characteristics and effects of the tsunami both locally and throughout the oceans; remote or nearby measurements of any phenomena associated with the eruption by any single or combination of terrestrial, oceanic, atmospheric or space-based instrumentation; as well as the assessment of eruption- and tsunami-caused hazards, their communication, impacts and implemented response activities as well as the effectiveness of the response and proposals for improving response plans.
Guest Editors for the Focus Section are:
