3 April 2026—Following the February application cycle, SSA awarded 11 grants to members at all career stages across our global community. The grants, funded by generous donations to the Society, will enable these scientists to share research, make professional connections and create events that help advance seismology.
Community Grants
SSA awarded $15,000 in Community Grants to fund these three collaborative projects:
- Shiba Subedi, Sajan K.C., Priyanka Dhami and Aastha Poudel received $5,000 to support Enhancing Advanced Research, Technical Skills, and Human Capacity in Seismology, EARTH-Quake 2026. Their hands-on training session in Kathmandu, Nepal will introduce students and other interested participants to passive-source seismic methods, microtremor Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) analysis and basic earthquake location techniques using tools such as SeisGram2K.
- Catalina Morales-Yáñez, Javier Ojeda, Ethan Williams and Gonzalo Montalva were awarded $5,000 to fund their Training on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) for earthquakes research and seismic building response. The session aims to expand the use of DAS for earthquake analysis and seismic hazard assessment in Chile.
- Helen Janiszewski, Hiba Kunwer, Ian Wynn, Sarah Nolan, Iván Rojas-Churkovic, Cristhian Salas and Pablo Urra-Tapia received $5,000 in support of a community-building forum in Honolulu, HI, the 2026 Seismology Student Workshop. Their event will invite students to share existing and newly developed techniques in seismic analysis methodologies and discuss their science and career-building experiences.
Global Travel Grants
SSA awarded $13,700 in Global Travel Grants to support these student and early-career members in sharing their research at conferences hosted by other scientific organizations around the globe:
- Giulio Pascucci, (University of Pisa), Guilherme de Melo (GEOMAR) and Codee-Leigh Williams (Victoria University of Wellington) will present at the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026 in Chiba, Japan.
- James Kirchenwitz (Miami University) will attend the SEG/SPE Injection Induced Seismicity Workshop in Alberta, Canada.
- Cindy Lim (University of Bristol) will present work at the 40th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission in Istanbul, Turkey.
- Sayan Swar (University of Rochester) will travel to Vienna, Austria, for the EGU General Assembly 2026.
Paul Andrew Spudich Travel Grants
Bolstered by a recent anonymous donation of $20,000, SSA’s travel grant program honoring the life and scientific contributions of Paul Andrew Spudich will help the following student and early-career members share research in earthquake source physics and ground motion prediction:
Irene Liou, an early-career scientists at GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences and Angelica Monserrat Buenrostro Orozco, a graduate student at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, will both travel to Istanbul, Turkey, where they will share their work at the 40th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission.
