7 January 2026—SSA has updated its position statements on Monitoring Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Other Hazards and Education and Workforce Development.
Hazards Monitoring: SSA strongly recommends that the U.S. Congress continue to support and improve observing and hazard monitoring networks including the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS), the Global Seismographic Network (GNS) and the Network of the Americas (NOTA), as well as alerting programs and products including the National Seismic Hazard Maps, the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System and the NOAA/National Weather Service’s Tsunami Forecasting and Warning Program.
Education and Workforce Development: The Earth sciences field is key to maintaining U.S. economic prosperity, safety, security and longtime standing as a global leader in scientific innovation. SSA urges U.S. policymakers to take the steps that will help grow and diversify the nation’s critically important pipeline of Earth sciences-focused talent, including seismologists, geologists, geophysicists and earthquake engineers.
SSA maintains position statements to provide scientific expertise on significant policy issues related to the understanding and application of their members’ scientific disciplines.
The statements were approved January 2026 by the SSA Board of Directors, with the aid of the SSA Government Relations Committee.
