The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, has openings starting in 2025 for at least one postdoctoral Green Scholar. For this special, out-of-cycle, recruitment, an applicant must have received their PhD later than January 1, 2024, or expect to receive it no later than than October 1, 2025. The appointment cannot start until after the award of the PhD. The applicant will be expected to be in La Jolla concurrently with the period of appointment.
We seek individuals who show evidence of producing, and continuing to produce, research in geophysics that is of the highest quality. For this recruitment special attention will also be paid to applicants who have lost promised support because of shifts in federal funding.
These positions are supported by funding from the Green Foundation for Earth Sciences, matched with extramural funds for specific research projects. Before submitting an application, applicants should contact potential IGPP mentors to find out if they have a suitable project. Green scholars are encouraged to broaden their experience through interaction with other researchers at IGPP; individual research goals may be pursued if project progress can be maintained. Information on recent IGPP research is available at https://igpp.ucsd.edu/research
The positions are for one year, renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Starting salary is $70,000/yr plus benefits, along with $3000/yr of discretionary research funds.
Applications are due by May 31, 2025, and should be submitted at https://igpp.ucsd.edu/about/green-foundation/scholarships/green-scholar-info. Potential applicants are strongly advised to initiate contact with prospective mentor(s) well before this date.
Applications must include a statement of research interests (1-2 pages, 12 point), a dissertation abstract (1 page), and a curriculum vita with publications list (1-3 pages, 12 point), along with personal information. (This includes immigration status, to allow us to be aware of the need for a visa). The application also requires contact information for two writers of support letters, but candidates are themselves responsible for ensuring that these support letters are submitted (by emails to greenfound@ucsd.edu) by June 15, 2025.
Review of applications typically takes 1-2 months. Applications may be accepted until the position is filled, but full consideration is not assured if all materials are not received by the deadlines given above.
