SSA Introduces New Journal Features

19 September 2017 – The premier seismology technical journals BSSA and SRL will get a new look and a host of reader-friendly features, as the journals make the transition to the Silverchair Information Systems online hosting platform through GeoScienceWorld, a consortium of society publishers of research and communications in the earth sciences.

The new site addresses for the journals are https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/bssa and https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/srl.

Among the new benefits for SSA members will be a Single Sign-on (SSO) feature which allows members to access BSSA and SRL from their web searches. For instance, by late October, all links from a Google or Google Scholar search for one of the journals’ articles will bring members directly to the article on the journal’s website, where he or she can sign in with a SSA username and password and return immediately to the full-text article.

Articles can also be accessed from the Members Area on the SSA website as well as from the “SSA Member Sign-in” option in the top menu on each journal’s homepage.

Regular readers of the journals online will also note a new option to view each article—a split-screen presentation that places the article text on the left side of the screen with tables, figures, multimedia and other related materials in tabs along the right side. The text and related media sides of the screen can be scrolled independently, and readers may also access the related media features from links in the text. (The standard view and PDF options remain available as well.)

Other features include:

• Improved search function that allows for advanced searches within references, images and abstracts
• Options to post article links to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and CiteULike, and to send links to colleagues via email, available with each article
• Option to download each paper’s citation to a variety of citation managers, including EndNote, Zotero and others
• Easy download of images and tables with article details into PowerPoint
• Responsive journal design is optimized for viewing on desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone

Through the “Advanced Search” option on the journal page, SSA members will also have the ability to access abstracts from 45 additional technical journals that are part of the GeoScienceWorld collaboration.

“These features will give our journal authors an excellent platform to share their research, and provide a more expansive, user-friendly experience for all of our members,” said SSA Executive Director Nan Broadbent. “We encourage members and authors to explore the new design, and to look for new features and refinements in the coming weeks and months.”.
