Fifty Years after the 1967 Koyna Earthquake: Progress in our understanding of Reservoir Triggered Seismicity (RTS)

4 May 2017--The Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) is soliciting papers for a Special Issue on Reservoir Triggered Seismicity. December 10, 2017 marks 50 years since the 1967 magnitude 6.3 Koyna earthquake in western India, recognized as the world’s largest Reservoir Triggered Seismic (RTS) event.
The earthquake killed about 200 people and injured more than 2000 people. Over the last five decades, a large volume of work has been carried out in Koyna and other RTS sites worldwide, such as the Acu Reservoir, Brazil; the Aswan Reservoir, Egypt; the Oroville Reservoir, California; the Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina; and Nurek Dam, Uzbekistan. These studies explored the relationship between seismicity and water level changes in reservoirs and developed potential mechanisms for triggered seismicity. However, several critical issues remain unresolved, with a portion of the scientific community skeptical about the RTS mechanism itself. With this background, BSSA solicit papers for a special issue that takes stock of the recent developments and current understanding on the important subject of RTS, not only in Koyna but also at other globally recognized RTS sites, 50 years after the Koyna earthquake.
The proposed issue would include the following themes:
1. Earthquake patterns, seismogenic faults and evolution of stress fields in RTS environments;
2. Subsurface structures from multidisciplinary data and their relation to potential trigger mechanisms;
3. Neotectonics, geomorphology and patterns of surface deformation in RTS regions;
4. Hydrogeological and geophysical characteristics with reference to RTS;
5. Rock mechanical properties in RTS zones inferred from lab / field studies;
6. Recurrent triggered seismicity and its sustenance in relation to the local tectonics;
7. Modeling of Reservoir Triggered Seismicity (RTS) and its predictability;
8. Multi-parametric precursory observations and prediction of triggered seismicity;
9. RTS in relation to regional tectonic evolution.
